Voice over ATM (VTOA)

Voice trunking, as presently specified by the Voice Telephony Over ATM (VTOA) subgroup of the ATM Forum opens the door for "light" carriers to offer VPN services over wide area ATM.

VPN over ATM will be of particular relevance to the new generation of light carriers and service providers who primarily resell the capacity of others, and who need to add value to their corporate service offerings. In combination with toll quality voice and fax compression technology, VPN over ATM carries the promise of delivering added service value at significantly reduced cost.

The benefit of moving to ATM to deliver VPN services, is that ATM can efficiently transport voice and data together on a single network. LAN interconnect, Internet and corporate Intranet services can then be provided via the same network and access pipe used to carry the VPN telephony service. The result is improved utilisation of expensive wide area bandwidth, simplified network management and reduced communications costs.

PQM Consultants have teamed up with a specialist in voice compression, Delphi Systems, to work on VPN over wide area ATM. The first fruit of this collaboration is a specification for a signalling system that will enable conventional PABXs with either DPNSS or QSIG signalling to interwork via an ATM network.

Signalling software based on this specification enables telephone calls to be established using ATM SVCs (Switched Virtual Circuits). Such software can also support the advanced feature-rich Supplementary Services that are a key feature of traditional private voice networks and VPN services used by corporate customers.
