Virtual Private Networks (VPN), which use switching resources within the public network infrastructure, are an important area today. Corporate customers expect VPNs to be more cost effective and more flexible than private networks based on leased circuits. They expect a wide range of innovative value added services, especially in the area of cost management. Tariffs for VPNs can be usage based.
Organizations within the data communicatons industry tend to think of VPNs for corporate data communications. The telecommunications industry tends to think of VPNs for voice transport. Whilst this distinction still persists, there is today much interest in convergence towards "multi-service VPNs" (i.e., for both data and voice) based on IP technology. Also, VPNs are being considered not only as the means of enabling inter-site communications but also as the means of integrating remote and mobile workers into the Corporate Network.
