Legacy Signalling via ATM

Until (and indeed for some time after) full deployment of ATM has occurred there will be a substantial amount of "legacy" narrowband equipment remaining in-service. Much of this equipment will continue to be useful even though it may not be fully ATM compatible. In fact, the business case for its replacement will take some time to mature in many cases. To prolong the life of such equipment, a new class of "adaptation" or "gateway" equipment will emerge to facilitate interoperability of legacy narrowband equipment via ATM infrastructures.

Based on the work of the ATM Forum, ITU-T, and ETSI, PQM Consultants' "specification for legacy signalling via ATM" defines the signalling functions and architectures needed for such a class of products.

Our specification identifies the specific technical requirements to be met by ATM Gateway Systems (AGS). These technical requirements are based on the corporate network digital signalling system known as "QSIG" or "PSS1". However, the Standards for QSIG / PSS1, developed at the European level by ECMA /ETSI and at the World-wide level by ISO/IEC, are of necessity intended for use in the general commercial environment and in some areas do not meet all requirements arising from the specific application. Our specification therefore refers to the appropriate industrial standards and supplements these (in a compatible manner) to meet specific requirements of the legacy signalling application.

The specification defines functionality to support the following requirements:
