Digital Private Network Signalling System (DPNSS)

During the 1980s, British Telecom and PINX manufacturers in the UK developed DPNSS, the Digital Private Network Signalling System, as an open standard. DPNSS was developed before ISDN was fully defined and before a basic QSIG definition was available, but its facilities were needed by private network customers who wished to make use of digital networks as soon as possible. DPNSS is rich in standardised supplementary services and its information flows have been used as the basis of work on the QSIG protocols. Interworking between the two systems has been specified.

DPNSS is defined in four documents that are available to any manufacturer, and many manufacturers have taken the opportunity to develop interfaces that conform to this open standard. The four documents are:
